The laboratory of Pomology was established in 1995. It covers teaching and research activities related to basic and applied fruit tree science (pomology), such as: physiology, ecology, propagation and cultivation techniques and their effect on fruit production and quality following guidelines of Integrated Production. Finally, the laboratory covers teaching and research on postharvest technology of fresh fruits.
Research activities of the laboratory staff are summarized as follows: environmentally-friendly cultivation practices for the major temperate tree species and the olive, environmental footprints for fruit production, applications of precision agriculture and smart farming, postharvest technology of fresh fruit, climate manipulation in orchards and its effects on plant and fruit, innovative alternative methods and materials used in Pomology.

Role in the AFOOT Cooperation Group:
The Laboratory of Pomology of the Department of Agriculture Crop Production and Rural Environment of the University of Thessaly is obliged to develop Carbon Footprint software, analysis and interpretation of Carbon Footprint results.

INTERBALKAN ENVIRONMENT CENTER (Partner)
Summary description of partner:
i-BEC is a non-profit and mission oriented international organization that links local communities and countries in the wider Balkan nations, with EU and UN agencies. i-BEC supports and co-develops with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki state of the art technologies and innovative research for sustainable management of natural resources and environmental protection.
i-BEC sustains training of civil and private sectors through long distance learning, translating Earth Observation [EO} data into services and creating Living Labs, thus enhancing Capacity Building of these sectors. In partnership with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is a leader in environmental research in Greece with more than 200 publications, mostly in international journals
i-BEC was founded on 30 July 2007 by the concerted efforts of the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, the Research Committee of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [AUTh] and the Municipality of Lagadas within the framework of the project “Establishment of Balkan Environment Center” [BEC] funded by INTERREG III / A, INTERREG III / B. In 2014, after 7 years of constant, active presence in Greece and the Balkans with numerous projects and programmes, the former ’’Balkan Environment Center’’ became the ’’InterBalkan Environment Center’’.
Αfter 15 years of successful course and active presence in Greece, in the Balkans in Europe, Asia and Africa, the Inter-Balkan Environment Center now operates as a flexible international organization with actions and collaborations between the public and private sectors as well as the research community, in Greece and abroad. During this course, he creatively contributed to the development of environmental awareness in Greece with actions at a global level that constituted environmental innovation, with research applications that turned into application standards for green policies at the Local and Regional level, with practical interventions in sensitive natural systems and environmental resources, by linking scientific knowledge with political public priorities to protect natural resources and support rural and natural ecosystems and environmentally sensitive areas.

Role in the AFOOT Cooperation Group:
For the needs of the Afoot project “Carbon footprint assessment of apple cultivation ” the Interbalkan Environment Center is in charge of the definition of the pilot area from where the field data will be extracted and the meteorological telemetric stations will be installed as well as the development of a digital imaging system of environmental loads.

The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Zagora-Pilio, with its activities covers the entire range of production, processing and marketing of agricultural products, the production, supply and marketing of agricultural inputs, as well as the construction, supply and marketing of means of agricultural production.
The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Zagora-Pilio is one of the oldest co-operatives, since it was established in 1916 by 199 people of Zagora. In 1985, the cooperative enters a new phase of action of organised commercial enterprise. The brand is enshrined and every authentic Zagorin apple bears the sticker which makes it stand out. In 1996 the European Union recognises the apples as “Protected Designation of Origin” products. The apples now travel across the world and conquer all international markets. 100 years of continuous production and presence in the agricultural sector!
The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Zagora-Pilio produces apples of high quality, tested and certified with the qualification of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This distinction certifies that the Zagorin apple is a product of high quality. By using the “Integrated Production” method the Zagorin apple is clean, healthy, tested and this is why consumers in Greece and all around the world trust it.
The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Zagora-Pilio now has a state-of-the-art, privately owned refrigerator-dispensary complex, which is considered one of the largest in the Balkans and proves the continuous investment project that is carried out in the field of modernization of its logistical infrastructure.

Role in the AFOOT Cooperation Group:
The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Zagora-Pilio undertakes the identification, collection and recording of the requirements of the study at field level and the promotion actions, namely the creation of printed information material, the organization of an information and awareness-raising workshop on the challenges of climate change and the participation in a conference.
